Gluten-Free Food Lists

Food product labels governed by the FDA must clearly list wheat if it is used as an ingredient. However, barley, rye and oats are not included in the allergen-labeling law. Barley is a particular concern because it is used in natural flavorings. It is still often necessary to contact companies to determine the gluten status of their products.

However, a number of large food manufacturers have voluntarily decided to list all gluten ingredients, including barley, rye, and oats. A list of these companies was recently compiled by one of our GlutenfreeIndy board members.

Foods labeled under USDA regulations are not required to list wheat or gluten. Some companies do so voluntarily.

Below are links to lists of food that have been checked with the manufacturer at some point and verified to be made from gluten-free ingredients. The date that each product was checked should be indicated, and it may not have been checked recently. These lists should only be used as guides to find products that you may be interested in, because gluten status can change. The best source of information is your own phone call to the manufacturer's customer service line. A toll-free number is often found on the product label.

These lists usually do not address the issue of cross-contamination. If a supposedly GF food is produced on the same equipment or even in the same facility as a gluten-containing food, it may be contaminated with gluten. In fact some manufacturers will not claim that their products are gluten-free, even though they use gluten-free ingredients, due to the probability of cross-contact in their facilities - or their suppliers' facilities. The best source of information on the chances of cross-contamination is the manufacturer.

Another source of information about foods is the Celiac Listserv or other forums. Often, contacts with manufacturers are reported there. Sometimes a quick search of the archives will give you fairly recent information about a product.

The Food Allergen Labeling Bill requires companies to disclose wheat-derived ingredients, but not rye, barley or oats, so that a call to the company is still necessary to confirm the gluten-free status of their products.

However, some companies have voluntarily decided to label all sources of gluten in their ingredients, including rye, barley and oats. One of our GlutenfreeIndy support group board members, Suzanne, has contacted many companies and compiled the following list. Cross-contamination may still be possible.

Please note: the following is *not* a list of gluten-free products. Many of their products contain lots of gluten, but it does mean that if wheat, rye, barley or oats are used as an ingredient, you can trust that it will appear on their labels.

***Newman's Own:Ê (NOT to be confused with Newman's Own ORGANICS, which is possibly problematic -- see below)
Newman's Own no longer publishes a statement on their website about listing gluten on the label, but they have a long-standing policy of doing this. They publish a list of no-gluten foods at: http://www.newmansown.com/faqs.cfm#q5 -- but these can also be determined by reading the label.)
[[[[ Separate from the Newman's Own basic product line is the Newman's Own Organic product line -- purchase at your own risk, though at least they are up-front about it: "Some of our (Newman's Own Organic) gluten free products include our: Chocolate Bars except Crisp Rice, Chocolate Cups, and No Salt/No Butter Pop's Corn, Olive Oil, and Our Balsamic Vinegar. Note: All of these items are manufactured on equipment that processes products containing gluten. There could be trace amounts of egg, milk powder, peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, and soy in any of our items. Our Wheat-Free/Dairy-Free items do have a type of gluten known as glutenin and gliadin, which is found in barley flour." ]]]]
