The Low FODMAP Diet
Are you gluten free but still struggling with unresolved GI symptoms? Your symptoms may be caused by short-chain carbohydrates. These mal-absorbed carbohydrates are fermented by gut bacteria, causing gas and other symptoms such as bloating. If you have been diagnosed with IBS or experience unresolved symptoms, the low FODMAP diet is worth a look. (FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols.) This diet limits fermentable carbohydrates, thus eliminating GI symptoms. In addition to gluten, the diet restricts lactose, sugar alcohols and certain fruits and vegetables.
